How Offensive

Literature is an opportunity to think about all the complexities of human experience, including injustice, etc. If you only want to read about happy, perfectly behaved, asexual people then you don't actually want to read literature and should avoid all English courses!"
"You are so reactive that you are unable to see what the stories are communicating. Quite literally you are unable to read the stories, unable to comprehend the stories, because the instant you see any allusion to sexuality you can only see red. You haven't actually earned the right to a legitimate critique of the text (never fully specified, by the way) to which you're reacting because you've not shown that you comprehend them. Further, you engage in an illegitimate form of argument called the ad hominem fallacy when you level personal attacks on those who write stories of which you disapprove or view them differently than you. This is college...and if you're not prepared to see what's presented to you and to think outside the box of your previous training, you're going to find college a very uncomfortable environment. Your task in college will be to examine your assumptions, to learn to support arguments, to look closely at things that may make you uncomfortable. If all you do is reject out of hand material that you are troubled by - and don't even understand it because you're so busy attacking it, you will entirely miss the point of a college education. That would be very unfortunate, because you're a smart guy, and you have the potential to get a lot out of college. Of course, you could attend a college run by your religious denomination and avoid thinking about anything that challenges you - that's a choice with which you might be happier, though it would limit your potential for intellectual and personal growth. Think about it...."
The previous statements were taken verbatim from the comments made on my classmate's last English paper. I won't put his name here to protect his privacy, but this so appalled me that I had to comment on it; seeing the actual comments help one to understand where I'm coming from. This woman is positively foul. I can't even comment on it now! Save it for later...bah.
